Shipmates,
I am pleased to report to you that on
May 25th I presented Walt Becker with a plaque along
with a lifetime membership and our Association’s congratulations and
appreciation for his work over the years.
For those of you who did not attend the most recent reunion,
during the business meeting the membership voted unanimously to
present Walt with this unique and distinguished award.

 |
Walt has been troubled
with medical issues in recent years and they have progressed to
the point that he has become bed ridden in a nursing home.
This is a frustrating proposition for this most active
individual. Walt has
worked tirelessly for our Association since its inception and for
the past six years or so he has served us as Secretary, Treasurer,
Membership Chairman, and Reunion All-around Assistant.
A former American Legion Commander, Walt has always been an
active member of his community
For the presentation we were faced with the prospect of Walt’s
possible disorientation from dialysis the day before and his
continuing pain medications.
Most fortunately, it was
a good day for him and the value of our expression was fully
understood. The
presentation was made with Walt’s wife,
Louise, and other family members present.
|
Also present was a
close friend of Walt’s, Brian, who acts as a volunteer spiritual
advisor for residents of the home.
He led us all in prayer for Walt’s recovery.
I cannot adequately express to you the sense of joy and
appreciation I read in Walt’s eyes and in his smile. From all accounts of his family, this has been a banner day
for Walt. After the presentation
we surreptitiously breached the nursing home’s rules, put a nail
in the wall and hung Walt’s plaque next to his bed.
He now will be able to see our recognition of him every
day.

On this Memorial Day weekend, when we
normally focus on our remembrances of those who have served our
nation and departed, it was sobering to remember our obligations
to our shipmates who are still among us.
If any of you wish to write to Walt, you may reach him at:
Pleasant Valley Manor, 4227 Manor Drive, Stroudsburg, PA
18360.
May God keep and preserve each and every one of you until we meet
again.
With best personal regards,
Chuck Weber
Vice President
USS RICH Association
